 Q.

I have been trying to get a straigth forward answer on the cost for Lasink (?), or permenent lens impants. I can not get any doctor to just tell me the costs. I want to see if I can afford it before I make an appointment and come in and have someone attempt to talk me into one or the other. Would you please provide that information? I can accept it in a private email rather than a post.
Anonymous, Tallahassee, FL 9/24/08

 A.

Our cost for WaveFront driven, CustomView Laser Vision Correction at our state of the art, climate controlled laser suite is $2,200 per eye. This is all inclusive with no hidden charges. The fee covers your evaluation and comprehensive testing, the procedure, any required touch-ups (< 5% of our patients) and your post-operative care for one year. Additionally, our patients benefit from and my 2 years of fellowship training @ LSU and 15 years of experience performing thousands of Laser Vision Procedures. If you are price shopping for vision, make sure you are quoted comparable and equal services. Many locations offer an inferior product, delivered by rental equipment from non fellowship trained physicians at discounted prices. When it comes to premium vision technologies, Palmer Laser Center strives for perfection in visual outcomes as we continue to be Tallahassee’s choice for laser vision correction since 1995.

 Q.

I am farsighted and would like to get rid of the glasses for good. I have worn glasses for almost twenty years. The optometrist told to hold up on lasik surgery as it is a rather new procedure and possible harmful side efects are unknown. I need a profession opinion and examination from a M.D.- ophthalmologist. Can you perform the exam and advise whether I am a likely candidate for lasik surgery?
Tallahassee, FL, carlljr@embarqmail.com 8/20/08

 A.

Laser Vision correction has been regulated and sanctioned by The United States Food and Drug Administration for close to 15 years. Laser Vision experience world wide goes back much further. I personally have been providing farsighted laser vision correction since it has been approved and available in the US. Candidacy for laser vision correction depends upon many factors unique to your particular eye. Palmer Eye Center offers complimentary Laser Vision screening at your convenience. Give us a call @ 850-877-7337 and ask to speak with our laser vision coordinator to schedule an appointment. We would be happy to speak with you about your surgical alternatives to contact lenses and glasses.

 Q.

How soon after cataract surgery should one eye's nearly be back at the severe worsened condition as before? I am speaking of myself. I had cataract removal surgery 2006. After that procedure, I only needed eye-glasses for driving at night. Now I must have my eye glasses on for driving during the day and to watch television day and night.

 A.

Refractive errors following cataract surgery tend to be stable. Formation of an “after cataract” however, is not uncommon, and can lead to the symptoms you describe. An “after cataract” is a clouding of the membrane that holds the intra ocular lens implant in place and can be easily repaired with a laser procedure. We would be happy to assist you with an appointment if you wish.

 Q.

My father was diagnosed with microdegeneration. of the left eye. Can you explain this disease to me?
Anonymous, Salem, NJ 8/12/08

 A.

I believe you mean Macular Degeneration. This is a slowly degenerative disease of the retina. It comes in all shapes and sizes. Your father’s Ophthalmologist can give you the specific details of the degree his ocular involvement. The American Academy of Ophthalmology has a lot of information available for you to read. Go to aao.org and type armd in the search window on the top right-hand corner of the page.

 Q.

Dear Dr. Palmer Thank you for your excellent work in replacing my cataracts with new lenses. You completed my surgery Friday, July 18. I didn't realize colors would be so vivid. I have received a receipt for the copay of $98.70 for the operation on my left eye but still need a receipt for the $123.00 for the right eye. Also I need a copy of the signed "Informed Consent For Cataract Surgery" for my left eye. I received the right eye consent form today. When can I begin to consider having an eye exam for a new prescription for my glasses? My follow-up appointment is 8/15/08. Sincerely Jesse C. Palmer, Jr. Crawfordville, FL
Jess Palmer, Crawfordville, FL 32326 7/22/08

 A.

I am glad to hear that you continue to do well. Because cataracts often progress slowly, many patients do not realize just how poor their vision has become. Consequently, Most are “pleasantly surprised” about their postoperative result. Spectacle corrections are typically given at the one month postoperative visit. I have forwarded your request to our billing department. You should receive the material forthright.

 Q.

7/17/08 Dr. Palmer I have several questions to ask prior to the start of my left eye procedure tomorrow. You completed my right eye on Tuesday, 7/15. The procedure was done at Nature Coast Eye Clinic. 1. From 1 to 10, 1 being the best, focus in the corrected eye is about 3. Is that normal after surgery? 2. In the corrected eye, I see a circular line on the right side. Can this be adjusted or will I just get used to it? 3. When I move my right eye side to side, the lens appears to follow the movement as if it were anchored loosely. If it weren’t for the line I see, I probably would not have noticed. Can this be adjusted? Thank you for your excellent service. I hope to talk to you in the morning prior to starting my second procedure. Jess Palmer POB 1102 Crawfordville, FL. 32326 downnup@nettally.com
Jess Palmer, Crawfordville, FL 7/17/08

 A.

The vision for your first eye is set for slightly near vision. This allows for blended vision once the second eye is completed. Try the 1 to 10 test with near print. The line you see to the side is from the microincision. It will fade quickly. I can assure you the implant is securley anchored. I look forward to speaking with you in the morning before your procedure. We will have time to discuss your questions completely then.

 Q.

I have COPD and take Atrovent and Advair. Would these have any effect on or during Cataract surgery? I do not require Oxygen but have shortness of breath st times, sometimes when lying on my back.
downnup, Crawfordville, FL 6/29/08

 A.

Modern cataract surgery, under skilled hands, takes only a few minutes to complete. The medications you mentioned do not have any specific direct effect on the surgery. You will however, be required to lay flat on your back during the procedure. Oxygen is provided and most COPD patients do very well without any discomfort.

 Q.

I have a small floating dot in my right eye especially when laying down watching tv. Is this anything to worry about?
Anonymous 6/13/08

 A.

These are typically referred to as “floaters”. Although very common and often without serious complications, they fall into what we call “retinal warning signs” and therefore, we do recommend evaluation with an eye care physician.

is it free i am 14 years old i won't all my body fat off so people can stop picking on me please thank you good bless
jac44, tallahassee fl 6/11/08

 A.

God has created this world with wonderful diversity. We all come in different sizes and shapes, each with our own unique characteristics. Unfortunately, our culture has lost site of God and what lies at the heart of beauty and truth. Kids who do not put God first can be very inconsiderate and consequently are mean to others. Even brothers and sisters can be hurtful to each other. Remember Gods loves you for who you are and have strength and peace in that. Also remember that our bodies are gifts from God and we should do our best to take care of them. Besides, we do not want to grow old and loose our ability to walk and end up with all sorts of diseases related to obesity. It is very important to have a healthy life style, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, avoid snack foods and sodas and remain active each and every day. Like Shaquille O’Neil says – get off that couch, get out side and play! God bless you, and yes, this is a free gift.

 Q.

Can strabismus be treated with botox?
anonymous, tallahassee, fl 6/02/08

 A.

Yes. However, the effect is temporary. Surgical intervention is the standard of care. With the correct technique, strabismus operations are highly successful.
