 Q.

What opitions are available when cataract surgery becomes neccessary after laser vision correction?
One of your first patients in Tallahassee, Crawfordville, Fl 3/17/08

 A.

As our population ages, it is becoming increasingly common for prior refractive patients to require cataract surgery. With close to three million successful cataract cases annually, cataract surgery is considered the most common and most successful surgical procedure performed in America each year. Laser vision patients can safely undergo cataract surgery with the expectation of the same excellent results as our other patients. With the availability of multifocal intraocular lenses, many patients function extremely well at both near and far and retain their spectacle independence.

 Q.

I have lattice degeneration with slight holes in the stretched area, very bad nearsightedness and astigmatism. Will the lattice prevent me from having lasik and if not could I have the lattice repaired to not be worried about tears?
Michele, Tallahassee 3/15/08

 A.

Your situation is quite common as lattice is frequently seen in patients with large degrees of nearsightedness. Laser therapy can be applied to the thin areas of the retina in the office. This is a simple procedure with little relative risk and helps to prevent long term complications from the holes. LASIK can then be performed six weeks later. A safe and excellent result would be expected.

 Q.

Is it possible, in identical twins, for one to have ASTIGMATISM and the other not?
Jamie, portland, Oregon 3/07/08

 A.

Ah Grasshopper… This isn’t stump the band. Yes, identicle twins may display different refractive states within their visual systems. This is particularly common when one member of the pair is delivered with salad tongs. The genetic transmition of refractive errors, although not completely understood, are manifested in part based on heredity.

 Q.

For almost 60 years I have been wearing glasses. I only use one eye. After wearing bifocals for several years - I decided to try one bifocal contact lens. I am delighted with the results. I have excellent visions both close and far away with the contact lens. My question is - can you do lasek surgery on my eye to provide bifocal vision?
Anonymous, Tallahassee FL 3/07/08

 A.

Currently, no. Visx has plans for a “multi-focal” ablation platform in the future, but no release date has been published. We do have multi-focal intraocular lenses that are being implanted with excellent results. Many cataract patients elect to have this done. If you do not have a cataract, refractive lens exchange can accomplish the same goal.

 Q.

I was diagnosed with Horner's syndrome 2 days ago. They did an MRI and I don't have a brain tumor nor lung cancer. I'm a 57 year old woman. I had a droopy eye 4 years ago, but since my car accident August 06, it has gotten a lot droopier. My vision is obstructed when I drive. I believe my cartoid artery was damaged in the accident. I was at a stop sign and got rear-ended. Since then, I've had constant headaches - tried acupuncture, chiropractors and deep massage therapy, nothing makes it go away. I was wondering if you think Horner's syndrome could have been caused by the accident and the damaged artery? Also, because I have this, what happens to my eye and/or any part of my body??? I want to know what is going to happen. Am I going to go blind or what? Thank you very much. Any info. will be appreciated.
Anonymous, Little Canada, MN 3/06/08

 A.

You won’t go blind. Your pupil may be slightly smaller on the effected side, and you may even notice a lack of perspiration on you forehead. Other than that, the eye ball is not involved. Horner’s involves the sympathetic system’s innervation to the eye including the lid. The sympathetic system travels in the neck along side of the carotid artery and could have been damaged at the accident. We would recommend a neuro-ophthalmologic consultation. The droopy lid can be repaired by a talented plastic surgeon.

 Q.

I wear contacts left eye= 8.6 pur, +1.50 right eye= 8.6 pur, +5.0 (mono vision contacts. I hate glasses, like the contacts but have so many problems with dry eye. Have trouble with focus at times. I want to know if lasik is right for me. e-mail info berts_place@comcast.net. I would need a payment plan and will have vision ins as of april 1st. please help thank you Bert
Bert, Tallahassee 3/03/08

 A.

Your refractive error is certainly manageable with laser vision correction. Monovision is an excellent option and we can duplicate this for you with the laser. We offer a variety of simple financing plans through our office and many of our patients find this the best way to acquire laser vision correction. Feel free to call our laser vision coordinator @ 877-7337 to schedule a complimentary screening. If you prefer you may contact our laser department at info@palmereye.com to set up your appointment. Seeing clearly is our business.

 Q.

Which eye care specialists in Tallahassee are most capable of providing care for albinism related low vision (20/80)?
John, Tallahassee, FL 3/03/08

 A.

Because the primary cause of visual loss in albinism relates to developmental issues with the retinal pigment epithelial cells, I would recommend a retinal specialist for diagnosis and classification. For visual rehabilitation and visual aids there are several excellent low vision clinics in Tallahassee. Please give us a call to discuss your requirements and we would be happy to make a specific recommendation for you.

 Q.

How often can one have lasik? Does scar tissue build up? My previous surgery was ten years ago. Thanks
no more coke bottles, TLH, FL 3/02/08

 A.

Typically lasik tends to be stable and therefore, once is enough - at least at our facility. We find it necessary to "enhance" less than 5% of our lasik cases. However, in rare situations, there may be a need for a touch-up after several years. This tends to be most common in patients with large initial refractive errors. Repeat lasik does not tend to cause a "scar tissue build up" and can be repeated. Because Palmer Laser Center is a large regional lasik refferal center, we do have experience with cases similar to yours. Please feel free to contact us for a complimentary evaluation.

 Q.

What makes an eye tear up while the other does not?
Anonymous, Monticello,Fl 2/20/08

 A.

Tearing in one eye can be caused by either dryness or a clogged tearduct. This can be diagnosed while you are in the office.
