 Q.

Hi Doc, I am a patient of Dr. Greenhaw here in Valdosta, GA. A few years back, you came to his office and examined me for lasik and determined that I was indeed a candidate. I'd like to proceed -- what do I need to do? I'm male, 44, extremely nearsighted, monocular, in good health. Do I need to see Greenhaw first? Ready to toss these glasses =)
Daniel, Valdosta, GA 2/19/08

 A.

We recommend that you schedule an examination with Dr Greenhaw’s office to once again ensure that you are a good candidate and to verify your ocular measurments. Once we have this information You can meet Dr. Palmer and have your surgery on the same day here in Tallahassee.

 Q.

I have a small "bubble" of skin on the white part of my left eye. It is clear, and can be moved to the side. It has been there for at least a year, but seems to be bothering me more now. It feels like something is in my eye. Is this something I need to be concerned about?
Bentmoose, Tallahassee, FL 2/01/08

 A.

A small “bubble” of skin on the white part of your eye is probably a clear, cystic lesion, commonly called a conjunctival cyst. A diagnosis cannot be made, of course, without first seeing the “bubble,” for a definitive diagnosis. Please make an appointment with your eye care provider to address your concern.

 A.

A new drug trial for an eye drop to treat macular degeneration is underway. For more information please go to http://clinicaltrials.gov or contact the maker of the video you watched: Methodist Hospital 713-790-3311. Several studies are taking place in this area for macular degeneration but the drug discussed in the video is not. If you would like more information on studies in Tallahassee please contact Southern Vitreoretinal Associates, P.L. 850-942-6700 or 800-940-1225.

 Q.

What is the average cost of Lasik surgery?
Anonymous 1/15/08

 A.

First, we must find out if you are a candidate for Lasik. The procedure recommended for you depends on the results of your tests. You can eliminate the hassle of contact lenses or glasses for as little as the price of dinner for two in an upscale restaurant. Monthly payments for Laser Vision Correction (LASIK) are as low as $60 and as high as $135. At Palmer Eye Center we offer a cycle of care for our laser vision correction patients. Your procedure includes a complimentary consultation with our laser vision coordinator, a one-on-one examination and consultation with me, extensive testing, topography, postoperative visits at 24 hours, one week, one month, three months, six months and one year. The only additional expense you incur is the purchase of one prescription prior to your procedure.

 Q.

Is there any type of eyeware that will improve my vision at one thousand feet? i am an aircraft pilot and need to see objects in water at 1000 feet of altitude. Thanks.. Lou 9852904832
Lou Underwood, Diamondhead Mississippi 1/14/08

 A.

Unfortunately, no technology exists to improve your personal vision for that much distance. My only suggestion would be the use of binoculars.

 Q.

How long would I have to wait for an appointment with you to find out if Lasik is the right choice for me?
Sydney Hughes, Tallahassee, Florida 1/09/08

 A.

At Palmer Eye Center we know how busy life can be so we have extended office hours. Depending on the type of contact lenses you wear we can usually see you for a consultation within three days of your initial contact with our office.

 Q.

How long before I return to normal activities after I have Lasik?
Kim Thompson, Perry, Florida 1/09/08

 A.

Lasik patients must return to the office the morning after their procedures to have their vision checked. Most people return to full, normal activity the day after their Lasik procedure. The procedure and recovery time cause very little inconvenience to a person's schedule.

 Q.

What do people say to you most often when they return for appointments after having laser vision correction?
Bob Richards, Havana, Florida 1/09/08

 A.

The most common comment is the patient wishes they had "done it sooner."

 Q.

How do you determine if I am a candidate for Lasik?
MJ Smith, Tallahassee, Florida 1/08/08

 A.

To determine if you are a candidate for Lasik we need to know your age, the strength of your glasses or contacts, and if you have a significant history of medical issues/concerns. If the answers to these questions are satisfactory we perform a battery of tests on your eyes. With these tests we determine your level of astigmatism, if you are nearsighted or farsighted, and we measure the thickness of your cornea. Our findings help us determine which refractive procedure is best for you. The majority of people today are candidates for laser vision correction.
