Ronald G. Willis, DMD Centre Pointe Dental Group

AREA OF SPECIALTY: Cosmetic Dentistry, Implant Dentistry, TMJ/TMD Neuromuscular Dentistry, Neuromuscular Orthodontics, Veneers. We also provide general dentistry and cleaning.

EDUCATION: Medical University of South Carolina, Certifications in Nobel Biocare Implants, ITI Implants, Practical Occlusion I, Mastering Mandibular and Myocentric Positioning II, Case Finishing II, Advanced Scan Interpretation IV, TMD I, Advanced Anterior Aesthetics, Master Aesthetics, Full Mouth Reconstruction, Advanced Posterior Aesthetics, Mastering Fundamentals of Neuromuscular Orthodontics, Neuromuscular Orthodontics II

EXPLAIN YOUR PRACTICE: It give me pleasure to relieve dental pain and help people feel confident in their smile. My attention to the smallest aesthetic details - such as the size, shape and color of teeth - can make a huge differene in a person's appearance.

WHY DID YOU GET INTO THIS FIELD? Cosmetic dentistry is what I've always wanted to do. It changes people's lives.

HOW HAS YOUR PRACTICE GROWN? My practice has actually gotten smaller since I bought it in 2000. At the time it was geared toward capitation plans and I would see 25 to 35 patients per day. Now, I have a cosmetic, fee-for-service practice and am able to give about six to eight patients daily more private, personalized service.

WHAT ARE THE NEW PRACTICES? Our office is equipped with the most current technology, including soft tissue laser to reshape and recontour gums, diagnodent laserlight to detect tiny cavities and intra-oral cameras. We perform diagnostics with the aid of the myomonitor and the K-7 system. This helps us analyze the patient's facial symmetrics and aid in smile design.

AWARDS/COMMENDATIONS: - Best Dentist, Tallahassee Magazine - "Best of" reader poll; Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies Clinical Instructor of the Year

OFFICE LOCATION: 2470 Care Drive Tallahassee, FL 32308 (850)877-5151

 Q.

I have suffered with TMJ since a whiplash injury a couple years ago. I wear a nightly splint and do daily therapy (stretching, heat/ice, other precautions). I was told I need to get a professionally made flat plane splint; how much would it cost for me to get that (total costs)? Would the consultation visit be free? My two top front teeth are new crowns; would I be able to get a bottom splint only that wouldn't affect these teeth? Thanks for any help.
C, Tallahassee, FL 12/29/09

 A.

sorry to hear about the whiplash. Flat plain splints are not very effective. A few Dentist still do them, but the success rate is low with there use. We have either fixed or removable orthorics, that are anatomical, so they are used to function like natural teeth. We can make a lower orthotic and that way you can leave your new crowns alone. it can be made to function with your new crowns. The pateint consult fee is $50.00 per every 15 min. most consults take about 15 min. hope we can help you.

 Q.

My husband woke up today with a severe tooth ache that radiated through his entire jaw. His cheek is also swollen. I looked in his mouth and he said the pain is right around a tooth that never came in when he was a child. I know that there is the obvious abscess tooth, gingivitis, cavities, etc. Is there any way he could be in pain because that tooth is now trying to break through? If you do think it is trying to come through, what would cause it to all the sudden want to come in now? I told him that he was probably teething... hehe ;)
TallyWife, Tallahassee, Florida 11/07/09

 A.

best thing to do is come in so we can take an X-ray, very quick and easy. then a diagnosis can be made. tell person who answers the phone you asked a question through tallahassee democrat. thanks

 Q.

I clench my jaw, day and night. (grind apparently at night). I've had a couple of upper dental mouthguards made over the years. The first was a hard acrylic guard which I hated because it was too tight (no longer have). The second made last year is a softer material. Now I feel like my front teeth touch before my back teeth. I have an overbite, and nearly all of my back teeth are crowned. I know the mouthguards are to protect my teeth, but I still clench my jaw and have headaches. Would a different guard be more appropriate (lower, PPM, NTI)
Frances, Tallahassee 8/24/09

 A.

We see this all the time, and most people have limited success. Hard or soft mouth guards. Our approach to treatment has evolved from years of trying different types of night or mouth guards. Today we use an orthotic that fells like teeth, we have been really successful. We treat the people who other dental TMJ specialist cant help. Soooooo to answer your question, we can help you. I could talk about this subject for hours, because we are so passionate about what we can do to help, when others have failed. Actually we do talk about it for hours and I lecture to other dentist in different courses about this same topic. awesome question, give us a call 850-877-5151

 Q.

Went to have a crown re-seated, the last tooth in my right rear lower, after it fell off, again. There's not much tooth there and the dentist recommended a "build up" and new, stronger crown. He also said the porcelin crown on my left lower eye tooth is cracked from top to bottom. It's a straight line crack he could touch and see. He did not install either of these since I used to live out of town. Money is tight and so I got the one crown re glued, but know sooner or later it will have to be replaced. What is a build up and any idea how long the cracked crown might last?
Anonymous 4/28/09

 A.

great question, a build up is adding to the tooth, either to fill in where there is a defect, or just adding to the tooth itself. unsure about the cracked crown, could last for years, also depends on the type of crown. thanks for the question

 Q.

Good day Dr. Willis, I was hoping to get some advice from you... I started working out intensely about 7 months ago... About a month or two after working out/lifting the weights I started getting these intense headaches that would get progressively worse as the day went on. I thought it was allergy related because the pain/pressure felt like it was coming from the Ethmoid sinus cavity area and around the lower back of the eyes. I also thought it was sinus related because I was completely debilitated by a sinus infection about 12 months ago (which is a whole different story and the primary reason I thought it was sinuses). Either way, since this most recent intense headache spell 7 months ago, I have gone to an ENT specialist, my primary care physician at least 6 times and got a full blown allergy test (got tested for some 72 different allergens, all of which came back negative). I also changed my diet to almost all organics, got HEPA air filters and started using a neti pot. Afte

Hi Matt, we see this often, where your bite or occlussion can actually be contributing to your headaches, there is this new mouth guard for athletes that is based off of old technology, its call PPM mouth guard, terrel owens just got one and loves it. Makes him stronger and faster, plus gets rid of headaches. Look at PPM on the internet.its neuromuscular based dentisrty. hope this helped.

 Q.

I was told a few years ago that I have impacted wisdom teeth that need to be removed. At the time, the idea of surgery scared me. Now I am noticing that my teeth are shifting. These teeth have to come out! I just graduated and am no longer on my parents' health care plan; the cost of the removal is a huge concern for me. I read some of the questions below, and you mentioned your practice offers "care credit". I am wondering if this application includes the option of having a co-signer. Do you remove impacted wisdom teeth, or would I have to speak with an oral surgeon?
Brittany, Tallahassee, FL 4/14/09

 A.

Hi Brittany, great question, the oral sureons can also help you finance the procedure, there are companys that they work with like care credit and american general, I would call Dr Jim Davis 850-878-5141 or Dr. Lawrence Pijut 850-216-2500 and ask them about finacing treatment

 Q.

I have a fully grown and partially grown wisdom tooth on the same side of my mouth. The one on the top is completley grown in and the one on the bottom is about half way grown in. I do have dental insurance through Humana but it only covers part of the surgery. Is there somewhere I can go to get them removed cheaply?
cali, tallahassee, florida 4/05/09

 A.

there are place's that do remove teeth cheaply, BUT there could be complications like permanent Numbness of lips and teeth, bleeding problem's, infection, dry sockets to just name a few of the complications that can sometimes occur. You may be lucky and have no problems at all. I have no idea what cheaply means to you, but when it comes to your health I wouldn't recommend going to cheap.
