Florida Association for Women Lawyers Elects First African-American

FLORIDA ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN LAWYERS
Tallahassee, June 21, 2005 -- The Florida Association for Women Lawyers Board of Directors announces the installation of June McKinney Bartelle as president for the 2005-2006 fiscal year. McKinney Bartelle, whose term begins on July 1, 2005, has served the Florida Association For Women Lawyers in numerous capacities including serving as the director of public relations and as president-elect.
She is currently a senior assistant attorney general where she serves as the general counsel to the Florida Commission for Independent Education.
McKinney Bartelle is "AV" rated by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest
peer-review rating an attorney can receive. She is lauded for her skills as a trial advocate and has vast experience in the areas of administrative law, complex civil and criminal litigation.
Prior to her work as a senior assistant attorney general, McKinney Bartelle served as chief attorney for the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation, Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco;
attorney for the Florida Public Service Commission, Bureau of
Telecommunications; and Misdemeanor Chief for the Public Defender of the Second Judicial Circuit. McKinney Bartelle has also worked for the Department of Labor and Employment Security Division of Unemployment Compensation and for the Bureau of Appeals as an Appeals Referee/Hearing Officer.
In addition to her law practice, McKinney Bartelle is active in community
and bar-related activities. She is a Supreme Court certified mediator.
She serves on the Florida Bar Standing Committee on Professionalism, Education Law Committee, and is a member of the Mediation Qualifications Board where she serves on the Mediation Qualifications Complaint Committee. She is a member of the Tallahassee Bar Association, William H. Stafford American Inn of Court, the Florida Government Bar Association, the Tallahassee Barristers Association, Tallahassee Women Lawyers and the Virgil Hawkins Chapter of the National Bar Association. McKinney Bartelle also served two terms as president of Tallahassee Women Lawyers, the local affiliate chapter of Florida Association for Women Lawyers and chair of the Capital City Bar Presidents Council.
Notable among the many community activities in which she has been involved, she served as chair of the Leon County Human Services Grant Committee, and as a founding mediator for the Leon County Neighborhood Justice Center. She is a life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a national public service organization, and a member of Greater Tallahassee Area Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Tallahassee, Class XVI.
A native of Tallahassee, McKinney Bartelle is a graduate of Howard University and the University Of Florida College of Law. While enrolled at the University of Florida, McKinney Bartelle served as the president of the Black Law Student Association and associate editor for development for the Journal of Law & Public Policy.
McKinney Bartelle anticipates an exciting term as president of the Florida Association of Women Lawyers.
"As a woman who is dedicated to the principles upon which FAWL was founded, I am proud to have been selected by our membership to continue the kinds of programs that have propelled women into the forefront of our profession," she said.
The Florida Association for Women Lawyers was formed in 1951. Its primary
mission is to promote the recognition and encouragement of the
contributions of women within the legal profession.
The installation ceremony, to be held Thursday, June 23 at the Orlando Marriott World Center at 7 p.m., is also a tribute to the female members of the Florida Supreme Court, Chief Justice Barbara Pariente and Justice Peggy A.Quince.
